Winter is the time when the leaves fall off the vines and cooler temperatures nudge vines into winter dormancy. It is also then when many of us enter a state of hibernation and curl up in front of the fireplace rather than face the outdoor freeze. Here at Anthonij Rupert Wyne, however, we hosted another successful wine club dinner on Friday the 6th of June, just in time to welcome the first of the winter snowfalls on the Franschhoek Mountains.
Guests were welcomed with a chilled glass of Pinot Grigio and canapés in front of the fireplace of the Old Manor House at Anthonij Rupert Wyne. They then braved the cold and boarded the tram for a cellar tour, where winemaker Mark van Buuren shared his expertise on winemaking with us. This was followed by a 3-course meal at a table fit for a king. The vertical tasting of different vintages of Sangiovese from the estate, skillfully paired with authentic Italian cuisine, was an unequalled experience. The pork loin, green beans and porcini mushrooms were all served harvest style in the centre of the table, allowing guests to help themselves for the scrumptious food. The passing around of serving dishes soon established an informal, family ambience, rather than that of just strangers sharing a meal. To conclude a memorable evening, Cantucci was served with our Bukettraube, or Vin Sante, produced by Anthonij Rupert himself, as well as Espresso. A truly Italian finale to an Italian feast!
