Oom Storm’s Rose Garden at the La Garonne Manor House

Behind the La Garonne Manor House is a 1575m² rose garden dating back to 1992.  The garden boasts 638 roses of 20 different varieties (see list below).

The rose garden was initiated in 1992 by the previous owners, Rhona and Graham Beck.  They decided to establish a rose garden for their son, Anthony’s wedding, held on the estate.  Oom Storm was appointed as the rose gardener in 1993 and until his death in 2001 he passionately tended to these roses. An engraved rock memorial stone can be seen at the entrance to this garden.  Before the rose garden was established, the area was used for stabling horses.  In addition, the garden was previously a venue for showcasing various art collections.

In 2006 and then again in 2014 the rose garden was redone and the boundary wall next to the old slave bell was completed.  The formal, circular design remains to this day.  In 2014 a wooden gazebo was constructed and it serves as the focal point of the garden.  At present it is used for sparkling wine tastings as well as high teas.
