L'ormarins Farm
L'Ormarins is the main estate in the group of farms and in the Franschhoek area. The vineyards are planted mainly on the slopes of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains where the granite soils produce strong expressive wines. Syrah is planted on warmer northerly slopes with better drainage at different altitudes. Some Syrah vineyards are planted more densely (6 to 9 000 vines per ha) on slopes too steep for mechanical production (tractors etc) in the typical echalas Rhone style.

Merlot is planted on the cooler eastern or higher lying areas, vines are trellised and trained vertically in soils with higher water retention. Our Sauvignon blanc is planted on the east facing slopes or the highest sites on the farm. We have recently planted some Cabernet franc and Cabernet vineyards of which some will be Guyot pruned. These blocks are mostly planted with the movement of the hot afternoon sun in an attempt to prevent exposure of bunches to direct sunlight. New Pinot Grigio blocks are planted on east or south east facing slopes which are cooler and angled against the hot afternoon sun.

All blocks in the lower lying grounds were scrapped and all new vineyards are planted against the slopes of the mountains. Two small areas on the valley floor, containing a unique soil type, will be planted in future to Merlot and Cabernet.

Varities planted: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot Grigio, Viognier, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc.
